| Dr. He Li and Dr. Boqing Chen Visited FJMU Promoting Academic Exchanges |

Dr. He Li and Dr. Boqing Chen visited FJMU from Aug. 10 to Aug. 12, 2002. During the two-day visit, the two U.S. alumni toured many clinical and research facilities in the school and its hospitals. They had in-depth discussion with FJMU colleagues regarding academic exchanges between the alma mater and the U.S. bio-medical institutions. They were received with warm welcome by the alma mater and its leaders.
The two alumni (both were enrollees of 1978 in FJMU) met with the President of FJMU, Dr. Liying Chen, Vice Presidents, Jiangyin Lin and Ying Luo and the President of the First Affiliated Hospital, Dr. Jianhua Lin, Secratary General of FJMU, Yangyi Chen, Dean of the school, Dr. Ming Zheng, Director of Graduate Programs, Ruixiang Zhou and Vice President of the the Dental School, Hui Cheng, Director of Foreign Affairs Office, Xiaonan Wu, Vice Chairman of the Physiological Department, Jin Wang.
On Aug. 10, Drs. Li and Chen first visited Departments of Surgery
and Medical Imaging at the Affiliated Union Hospital of Fujian
Medical University in the morning. They were impressed with new
high quality MRI machine recently installed in the Imaging
Department. In the afternoon Dr. Li gave a seminar on the "kainate
receptor mediated neuroplasticity in the amygdala" and had
broad discussions with faculty members and staff in the
Departments of Physiology and Pathphysiology on current research
in the neuroscience, laboratory construction and on establishing
a long term collaboration in some commonly interested research
projects and on training faculty members from FJMU in his
laboratory in USA. Dr. Li also visited a couple of laboratories
in the School of Basic Medical Science and was very impressed
with the updated equipments and new modernized laboratory space.
Dr. Chen also had extensive discussion with school leaders on how
to establish a first class department of rehabilitation and
offered some good comments and guidance on choosing teaching
materials for coming students to learn rehabilitation. On Aug. 11,
Dr. Li also had a profound discussion with his previous mentors
Dr. Binjung Jia and Xiuzhong Dai on neuroscience research and
faculty training. Drs. Chen and Li also had chance to meet with
classmates working in Fuzhou and Putain areas and are impressed
by their enormous achievements over short period of time. They
are not only the key persons that are serving for medical schools
and hospitals all over Fujian province but also are the key
persons that are offering medical care to the people in the
province. The two U.S. alumni think high of their contributions
to the medical school and to the society and they thank them for
their kind hospitality during the visit. Drs. Chen and Li were
all moved with enthusiastic treat from leaders and colleagues of
university and encourage all the alumni to contribute their
energies as much as possible to strength the teaching and
research activities in FJMU.
Dr. Li is an Assistant Professor at Bethesda, Maryland and Dr.
Boqing Chen is an Attending Physician, a faculty member of UMDNJ
at New Jersey. Dr. Li is also member of the Working Committee and
the Subcommitte for Scientific Research of AAFMUA. Dr. Chen is
also member of the Working Committee and the Subcommittee for
Clinical Medicine of AAFMUA.
